This follow-up course, "Trauma-Informed Community Practitioner," is designed for those who completed the initial training. It explores trauma-informed approaches extensively, applying six core principles in community settings. Participants learn to assess organisations, create actionable plans, and manage secondary traumatic stress. This course enhances understanding of trauma-informed practices and emphasises self-care. Prerequisite: Trauma Awareness Level 1.

This course is designed to build upon the knowledge and skills acquired in the Trauma Awareness: Places & Spaces Level 1 training. Participants are encouraged to register only if they have successfully completed the level one training.

The focus of this follow-up course is to delve deeper into the concept of trauma-informed practice covering these key areas:

  1. What is Trauma-Informed Practice: Participants will gain an understanding of what trauma-informed practice entails. This likely includes recognizing the impact of trauma on individuals and communities, understanding trauma triggers, and fostering a sensitive and supportive environment.
  2. Applying the Six Core Principles: The course will explore the five core principles of trauma-informed practice and how they can be effectively applied in various community settings. These principles include safety, trustworthiness, choice, collaboration, and empowerment.
  3. Assessing Your Organisation and Creating an Action Plan: Participants will learn how to assess their respective organisations through a trauma-informed lens. This involves evaluating existing practices, policies, and procedures to align them with trauma-informed approaches. Subsequently, participants will work on developing actionable plans for implementing changes and improvements.
  4. Avoiding Secondary Traumatic Stress, Vicarious Trauma, and Compassion Fatigue: This segment of the course focuses on the well-being of volunteers and employees working in trauma-related fields. Participants will learn strategies to prevent and manage secondary traumatic stress (the emotional toll of working with people who have experienced trauma), vicarious trauma (the emotional impact of hearing about others' traumatic experiences), and compassion fatigue (burnout due to excessive empathy).

Overall, the course aims to equip participants with a deeper understanding of trauma-informed practices and strategies to apply these principles effectively in community settings. It also addresses the importance of self-care and maintaining emotional well-being when working in roles that involve exposure to trauma.

Before registering, potential participants should ensure they have completed the Trauma Awareness: Places & Spaces Level 1 training to make the most of the advanced concepts covered in this course.
